Today at Author Stalker, we have one of the best new authors that broke out last year, Kristy Marie. She has the kind of humor that cannot be faked. If you haven’t yet, please check out her book, Commander In Briefs.
Me: Congratulations on your book “Commander In Briefs”. What inspired you to write this book? Why baseball and the military?
Kristy: Thank you! Inspiration for Commander in Briefs… Let me address the baseball aspect first. I never understood why tropes couldn’t be combined because in real life all kinds of crazy shit happens and it never follows a particular structure. I thought why can’t I have it all? I love baseball. With. A. Passion. Especially, pitchers. I started CiB with a whole different concept with Theo and Ans, but, one day, I was driving to work and passed a church who fed the homeless every Wednesday. They lined up down the sidewalk in the morning to ensure their spot in line for lunch. As I passed, I saw a guy in fatigues and it just had me thinking what a tragedy his situation must have been for him end up on that sidewalk. And then it hit me, what if an every day woman became their hero and rescued them like they rescued us? So, I changed my whole concept of Theo and Anniston and CiB was born.
Me: Are any of your characters based on people you know?
Kristy: Not at all. They are all figments of my imagination.
Me: Anniston is a very unique name. How did you select the names of your characters?
Kristy: I literally pulled them out of my ass. 🙂 I hear names from everywhere and I just take them and run with the ones I like.
Me: What did you edit out of this book?
Kristy: A whole other story. LOL Originally, Theo and Thad fought over Anniston and it was more of a sports romance.
Me: What was the hardest scene to write?
Kristy: The prologue. I rewrote that thing about twenty times before I was happy with it.
Me: You have both Theo’s and Cade’s POV in the book. What is the hardest aspect of writing from a male POV?
Kristy: My husband says I can talk locker room talk better than he and his friends. I have always been friends with guys and can hang when it comes to the lingo probably more than I should be proud of. But, I don’t find it hard at all writing from the male POV. I enjoy it more so than writing the female’s.
Me: What can you tell us about Cade’s book?
Kristy: Hmm…It’s totally different from CiB. Cade is so much deeper than Theo and has so much to overcome that I really wanted the reader to come with him-and his girl- on this unforgettable journey of healing and finding himself with his unconventional family.
Me: Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
Kristy: Each book can be read as a standalone but to really get to know the family, it’s best if they are read in order.
Me: If you can collaborate with an author (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
Kristy: Mariana Zapata or LJ Shen! These ladies inspire me everyday with their incredible talent. I fangirl hard and probably would be too nervous to even write a word with them.
Me: What is the first book that made you cry?
Kristy: Fucking Twilight. Edward you selfless, hot vampire….swoon.
Me: Now for some harder questions… tattoos or no tattoos?
Kristy: I like both equally.
Me: Beard or no beard?
Kristy: No beard. I know, boo me all you want. I don’t like them.
Me: Boxers, briefs or commando (like Theo)?
Kristy: I generally like boxers but commando brings out my inner kinky girl.
Me: If you can have any accent in the world, what would it be?
Kristy: Australian! Hello, Chris Hemsworth!
Me: If you can be a book character, who would it be?
Kristy: Clary freaking Fray from the Mortal Instruments.
Me: Have you had an idea come to you at the most inopportune moment? If yes, where?
Kristy: In a meeting, and I’m trying to scribble it on my hand so I can get back to my office and write it down in a more secure location.
Me: What do you want your tombstone to say?
Kristy: Here lies Kristy. She’s finally fucking quiet!
Me: Any last thoughts for readers?
Kristy: Thank you for being a reader and actually giving me and my crazy story a chance. I’ll try my best never to disappoint you.
